When Should Makeup Brushes Be Replaced?

By Regina Paul, eHow Contributor
There are things a person can look for to determine if it is time to replace makeup brushes.

Shedding

  • If every time a makeup brush is used, a person finds little bristles on her face or that have dropped into the sink, this could be an indication that it is time to replace that particular makeup brush. One test that can be performed is to run the makeup brush over the back of the hand and if more than 10 little bristles fall out, then it is time to replace that makeup brush.

Acne

  • Makeup brushes can easily pick up bacteria if they are not cleaned periodically and stored properly. A person can clean makeup brushes with a bit of shampoo and water, and they can be stored in their own clean makeup bag. One way to know that it may be time to replace your makeup brushes is if a person notices that she is having more acne breakouts than normal. This can indicate that there are bacteria on the makeup brushes, and while a person can clean them to see if that fixes the problem, if after doing so, the problem persists, then it is time to replace the makeup brushes.

Misshapen

  • When makeup brushes are used over periods of years, it is possible for them to become misshapen, especially if a person tends to press the brush end hard against her face. If a person is one who does this and notices over time that the makeup brush is not going back to its original shape, then it may be time to replace that makeup brush. If a person continues to use a misshapen makeup brush, it may apply her makeup unevenly, which is something to be avoided as it can be very noticeable to others.
