Hangers 101: Exploring a Few Types of Hangers

Tip 7: Invest in the right hangers.

It might be surprise most people but different garments require different hangers and using the wrong one can often damage clothes, especially those with delicate fabrics. Here’s a quick look at the most common hangers and how they should be used:

Wire Hangers
This is the least expensive type of hanger and if you’ve noticed, is the type most often used by dry cleaners. They are also the least desirable type for your clothing. Wire hangers are flimsy and collapse under the weight of garments. Also, their sharp slope often leaves marks on the shoulders of clothes that even ironing can’t get rid of. If you must use these, use it for the shortest time possible. Whenever I get wire hangers from the dry cleaners I simply drop them off at my local recycling facility.
Tubular Hanger
These are inexpensive and lightweight thus making them perfect for light garments such as tees. Most of them have notched shoulders that make them perfect for strappy tops and dresses. Since it’s plastic, you needn’t worry about rust but this is also makes it lightweight and unsuitable for coats and heavy fabrics.
Molded Plastic Hanger
Again, these can be lightweight or heavy and have a wire hook which also makes them very durable. Their wide, rounded shoulders will ensure that you never have hanger marks on clothing. I use these for my daily wear coats and the lightweight versions for cardigans.
Padded Hanger
Padded hangers add an element of glamour to my very ordinary closet and they are perfect lingerie, lightweight and delicate garments. They are covered in smooth fabrics such as satin and thus completely eliminate the risk of snags. Some of these have buttons sewn on at the edges and this is great for preventing straps from sliding off.
Don’t use these for skirts or slacks, they will slip off and lie in a crumpled head on the floor. Also, I wouldn’t recommend using these for coats or heavy garments; they give rise to shoulder bumps.
Wood Hangers
Men tend to prefer wood hangers, as they are ideal for suits, jackets and coats. Strong and sturdy, they last for ages and hold their shape under the heaviest fabric. Also, when you use wooden hangers, they prevent clothes from hanging too close to each other and thus lengthen the life of your clothes as they allow air circulation and less friction between garments. Cherry, walnut or ash are the most common types of wood hangers.
Cedar Hanger
We have to admit that we love the aroma of cedar hangers. They eliminate the need to hang pot pourri in your closet altogether. Cedar hangers are also excellent for the health of your clothes. Cedar keeps moths and their larvae away, and both are extremely damaging to any type of fabric.
Further, unlike wood hangers, cedar hangers aren’t varnished. This means that the natural wood is exposed and it absorbs moisture which prevents mildew, mold and acts as a natural deodorant for your clothes. They are long lasting and very easy to maintain.
This is by no means a comprehensive list of all hangers available but a list of the most basic ones. Specialty hangers exist for all sorts of clothes, including your Halloween costumes.
However, for regular usage, if you have any of these hangers then you know that you’re closet is in very good state.
