Relief Chopper Crashes in Manila Bay
A helicopter which carried relief supplies crashed in Manila Bay Sunday afternoon.
The private chopper, which came from Caticlan, crashed close to Bulacan or about nautical miles from North Harbor in Manila.
The pilot who is Capt. James Eagle and one passenger survived the crash with the help of fishermen and the US Marines who were on their way to Tacloban.
Capt. John Andrews of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said a C-130 from Villamor Air Base saw two passengers of the helicopter floating on the water and immediately dropped life vests to them.
Investigation is still on going to determine the cause of the crash.

Google and Microsoft take steps to block Internet search results linked to child porn
photo : Justin Sullivan/Getty Images |
by Kaylene Hong
Google revealed today that it has been putting more than 200 people to work in the last three months to develop new technologies to block Internet search results linked to child porn, after UK Prime Minister David Cameron in June demanded Google and other Internet giants to get rid of child abuse images online.
Writing in British newspaper Daily Mail, Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt reveals that the search giant has finetuned its algorithms to clean up the results for more than 100,000 queries that might be related to the sexual abuse of children.
The changes will be rolled out in more than 150 languages, “so the impact will be truly global,” Schmidt says.
The Daily Mail notes that Microsoft, which operates Bing and powers Yahoo, will also confirm at a Downing Street summit on Internet pornography later today that it will roll out similar restrictions.
However, Schmidt warns in his piece that “there’s no quick technical fix when it comes to detecting child sexual abuse imagery” — as an algorithm won’t be able to differentiate between innocent pictures of kids at bathtime and genuine abuse. He explains:
So we always need to have a person review the images.Once that is done – and we know the pictures are illegal – each image is given a unique digital fingerprint. This enables our computers to identify those pictures whenever they appear on our systems. And Microsoft deserves a lot of credit for developing and sharing its picture detection technology.
To address how the filming of crimes is on the uptake, Schmidt says that Google’s engineers at YouTube have also come up with a new technology to identify such videos. The technology allows illegal videos to be ‘tagged’ so that all duplicate copies can be removed, and it’s already being tested — so it could hopefully available by next year to other Internet firms and child safety organizations.
Google will also start displaying warnings from both itself and charity organizations at the top of its search results for more than 13,000 queries, which inform users that child sexual abuse is illegal and tell them where to get help.

8 Travel Tips That Save You Money
Try these strategies the next time you're making plane, car or hotel reservations.
photo:google.com |
Never book a premium hotel room or luxury car — unless it's a very special occasion and you're worried about availability. Instead, save money by reserving a standard room or car and then asking for a free upgrade upon arrival. You can even get on-site upgrades on discounted rooms.
2. Freighter cruises
Looking for an offbeat cruising experience at a reasonable price? Check out freightercruises.com. You'll travel with the crew and cargo aboard a commercial vessel — usually with very comfortable room and board — and save a boatload of money.
3. Pre-trip planning
Before traveling, consider subscribing to a daily deal website like Groupon, LivingSocial or Double Take Deals in your destination city and take advantage of discounts at restaurants and attractions. You can easily access the vouchers from your mobile phone.
4. Last-minute lodging
Most travel apps offer significant discounts for same-day hotel reservations. It's a great way to get a deal on high-end lodging.
5. Free extras
Like in La Quinta Inns & Suites, Hampton Hotels, Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites and Quality Inn offer guests free breakfast and free Internet access. In the country or in the location you will stay offer just the same all you have to do is inquire.
6. Confirm it
When you reserve a car, always ask for a confirmation number and an email confirming the reservation. When you pick up the car, verify the cost before signing the agreement and ask whether a better rate has become available.
7. Duty-free dealing
Except for cigarettes and liquor, few duty-free purchases are cheaper. Even then, U.S. Customs allows only 200 cigarettes and 1 liter of alcohol before making you pay taxes. Other goods, such as jewelry, watches, electronics and perfume, are often priced higher, so it's smart to check prices at home or online before you go overboard at the airport.
8. Sight-see for free
The National Park Service has several free admission dates each year at national parks and attractions. Check nps.gov and search "free entrance days" for dates.

Yolanda Strongest Typhoon Worldwide to Make Landfall
MANILA - Super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) is now considered one of the four most powerful typhoons ever recorded in the world and the most intense to have made landfall, according to Jeff Masters, the director of meteorology at US-based Weather Underground.
Yolanda generated wind gusts of 379 kilometers an hour on Friday morning, according to the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
Masters said the previous record for the strongest typhoon to make landfall was Hurricane Camille, which hit Mississippi in the United States with sustained winds of 190 miles an hour in 1969.
The US expert said he expected the damage in Guiuan, a fishing town of about 40,000 people that was the first to be hit on Friday, to be "catastrophic."
Communication lines with Guiuan remained cut off in the afternoon, and the civil defense office said it was unable to give an assessment of the damage there.
One of the most intense typhoons on record whipped the Philippines Friday, killing three people and terrifying millions as monster winds tore roofs off buildings and giant waves washed away flimsy homes.
Yolanda smashed into coastal communities on the central island of Samar, about 600 kilometers (370 miles) southeast of Manila, before dawn on Friday with maximum sustained winds of about 315 kilometers (195 miles) an hour.
"We've had reports of uprooted trees, very strong winds... and houses made of light materials being damaged," Philippine Red Cross chief Gwendolyn Pang told AFP on Friday afternoon as Haiyan swept across the archipelago's central and southern islands.
The government said three people had been confirmed killed and another man was missing after he fell off a gangplank in the central port of Cebu.
But the death toll was expected to rise, with authorities unable to immediately contact the worst affected areas and Haiyan only expected to leave the Philippines in the evening.
"The winds were so strong that they flattened all the banana plants around the house," university student Jessa Aljibe, 19, told AFP by telephone from the Samar city of Borongan shortly after Haiyan made landfall.
All telephone contact to the island was later lost as the typhoon moved inland.
"We have put rescue teams and equipment at different places, but at the moment we can't really do much because of the heavy rain and strong winds. There is no power," said Pang, the Red Cross official.
In Tacloban, a nearby city of more than 200,000 people, corrugated iron sheets were ripped off roofs and floated with the wind before crashing into buildings, according to video footage taken by a resident.
Flash floods also turned Tacloban's streets into rivers, while a photo from an ABS-CBN television reporter showed six bamboo houses washed away along a beach more than 200 kilometers to the south.
20 typhoons a year
20 typhoons a year
An average of 20 major storms or typhoons, many of them deadly, batter the Philippines each year.
The developing country is particularly vulnerable because it is often the first major landmass for the storms after they build over the Pacific Ocean.
The Philippines suffered the world's strongest storm of 2012, when Typhoon Bopha left about 2,000 people dead or missing on the southern island of Mindanao.
President Benigno Aquino on Thursday had warned his compatriots to make all possible preparations for Haiyan.
"To our local officials, your constituents are facing a serious peril. Let us do all we can while (Haiyan) has not yet hit land," he said in a nationally televised address.
More than 125,000 people in the most vulnerable areas had been moved to evacuation centres before Haiyan hit, according to the national disaster management council, and millions of others huddled in their homes.
Authorities said schools in the storm's path were closed, ferry services suspended and flights cancelled.
In the capital Manila, which was on the northern edge of the typhoon's path, many schools were closed amid forecasts of heavy rain.
One particularly vulnerable area in Haiyan's path was the central island of Bohol, the epicentre of a 7.1-magnitude earthquake last month that killed 222 people.
At least 5,000 survivors were still living in tents on Bohol, and they were moved to schools that had been turned into evacuation centres.
The Philippine government and some scientists have said climate change may be increasing the ferocity and frequency of storms.
Masters said warm Pacific waters were an important reason for the strength of Haiyan, but said it was premature to blame climate change based on the scanty historical data available

MANILA – Singers Daniel Padilla and Sarah Geronimo have been nominated in this year’s World Music Awards, which “honors the best-selling recording artists from every continent.”
Padilla, who is known for his hit song “Nasa Iyo Na Ang Lahat,” has been nominated as World’s Best Male Artist along with fellow Filipinos Christian Bautista and Jed Madela. They will be up against big recording artists like Justin Bieber, Psy and Elton John.Geronimo, who also made it to the World Music Awards last year, is one of this year’s nominees for the World’s Best Female Artist Award, with Asia’s Songbird as her only Filipino competitor. Other nominees in this category include Adele, Miley Cyrus and Beyonce.
Padilla and Geronimo were also nominated as World’s Best Live Act and World’s Best Entertainer of the Year along with Madela and Velasquez.
According to its website, the World Music Awards “are presented on sales merit and voted by the public on the Internet.”
“There is no jury involved and the Awards truly reflect the most popular artists as they are determined by the actual fans that vote and buy the records,” it added.
Padilla’s debut album reached platinum-record status only three months after its release. The “Got to Believe” star launched his second album early this year.
Geronimo’s newest album, “Expressions,” has been another massive hit, following the success of her previous studio albums.
The singer-actress marks her tenth year as the Philippines’ “Pop Star Princess” with a series of concerts in November and December.
